Chrome Hammer Ascension

ADD TO WISHLIST >

Sometimes you just want an elf and a ghoul to go shoot at each other in the cyberized back alleys of neo-berlin.

* * * * *
Welcome to Chrome Hammer Ascension.

In this solo campaign game your gang of punks will attempt to take on the mega-corporations of the ascended world. Dragon CEOs run pharmaceutical companies while flame demons prowl the back alleys and kobold zealots trade shots with an elf hacker.

CHA featuers a full campaign game where your punks gain experience, find new cool gear and hopefully don't end up face down in a rainy alley when a security guard finally frags them.

Random events, extensive lists of gear and abilities and a huge array of creatures are present in the book, allowing for you to really immerse yourself in the world of cyber fantasy.

The combat system is based on Squad Hammer and Chrome Hammer allowing fast, colorful combat without being bogged down by complex rules, letting you focus on the scenario you are playing and the enemies you are facing down.

Intended from the ground up as a solo game, all you need is a handful of miniatures to get started doing battle on the blood-slick streets, in VR space or the astral plane! Each campaign sees you fighting the mega-corps leading to an epic showdown against their monster CEO.

All of this is supported by included random tables to add flavor to the game experience.

This is a fantastic opportunity to use some figures you have not had a chance to use yet, plan some wild new paint jobs or conversions or bring some beloved old favorites back.

* * * * *

The core mechanics use a 2D6, pick highest roll to determine how many characters can activate each turn with characters being able to perform an array of actions.

Ranged combat is resolved with a 2D6 roll trying to exceed a target number, with enemies in close range being permitted to return fire.

Physical injury, squad casualties and morale is all merged into a single damage score, which can be reduced through the use of certain actions. This allows a fast-playing but tactical feeling experience.

Mechanics are included for stealth missions, spells and more.

* * * * *

The rules are intended for solo play and are stand-alone. You do not need a copy of Chrome Hammer or Squad Hammer to play.

The intended play space is roughly 3 x 3 feet though smaller tables are manageable.

Game scale is agnostic but will play fine in both 15mm and 28mm+.

Record sheets are included.

Great rule set but could really use an editing pass:

“ Put away all dice that rolled over the highest Reaction score in your force. Assign each of the remaining dice to one of your Major characters or Combat Teams.”

Just as an example, the above description of assigning reaction dice is not accurate according to the rest of the rules. It’s doubly confusing because this is the first time in the rule book where assigning reaction dice is explained. It turns out that you don’t “put away” any dice. They are all assigned.

Quick question: when shooting during enemies movement, I assume this can be done at any point during their movement?

I was about to ask about that :) Luckily Bug Hunt will get a nice update pretty soon, so it should be all fixed. The old wording of the reaction dice got a lot of people confused. I do appreciate the feedback either way.

As to your question, as a principle, the Five Parsecs games do not use any kind of "interrupt" movement. I don't think you'd break anything if you did though.

Thanks for the reply : )

The whole post was actually about bug hunt. In bug hunt, if I’m shooting at an enemy during enemy movement, can I shoot at anytime during that enemies movement?

I’ll add any more questions over on the comments for bug hunt.

I look forward to the update!

Hello everyone! I just bough ALL Chrome Hammer books and I was wondering... What's the difference between Chrome Hammer ASCENSION and Chrome Hammer? Thanks in advance! :)

Thanks!

The regular game is "normal" cyberpunk while Ascension has magic and strange creatures. The regular game is also intended more as a player vs player experience while Ascension is a solo campaign.

Thank you for letting me know mate! Really appreciate all the love that you "put" in your games (I got almost all sci-fi and post-apoc themed games that you released the last years... with the expansions) and your quick reply. Another question: Can I use the "normal" game with the rules and everything with Ascension's solo capabilities? Do you believe it is easy to "mix" the two? I really don't like magic messing with cyberpunk. I know I know, I did read the chapter that "changes" the magic with more science but I would prefer to avoid it in general!

I'm not sure they'll "mix" exactly. The CHA rules have been tweaked for solo play, and then evolved from there. That said, if you just want to play CH by yourself, it's not hard. That's how I've always played it. I suppose you could apply the AI "algorithm" from CHA to the enemies in CH, at least for the Corporate units.

On the other hand, if you want the full "solo experience", it's not too hard to just choose human characters and human enemies and protocols. Choosing is allowed in the rules. If even seeing references to magic is a distraction, I guess the next best thing would be to copy out the tables and print up sheets that only show you the standard cyberpunk stuff.

I hope this helps!

How many enemy models do I need to play?

Thanks for the question!
As written, it could be a bunch, but we all struggle with getting games to the table sometimes, so the rules allow for a lot of flexibility.
So, you'll need four Guards, for certain, and then maybe 4 more enemies for Reinforcements (and that's if things have gone horribly wrong). Normally you roll for the enemy type, but the rules say you can pick them if you need to.
I hope that helps. Please let me know if you have other questions.

Are the orc stats right? with the extra concealment? Cuz then it seems like there isn't much point in choosing a troll over an orc for a "bruiser" type character

Thanks for the question! If by "concealment" you mean "Cloak", then I think they're both valid choices. The Troll might even be a little bit better once the actual fighting begins if you take into account its inherent Armor and the Orc's inability to Regroup. Of course, with much of the game being sneaky, that maybe pushes things back down to equal. Pobody's nerfect, but I think they're pretty close overall.

I understand there is an updated version available. I already printed out and had spiral-bound the original version. Is there a list of changes somewhere? I really don't want to print this out again: I'd much prefer just marking up my existing copy.

If I purchase Chrome Hammer Ascension, is there any reason for me to also get the original Chrome Hammer? Are there rules, scenarios, etc from the original book not found in Ascension? Thanks.

Chrome Hammer is aimed at PVP instead of solo play and there's some slightly different scenarios. I'd say unless PVP play is something you are specifically after, you can probably just stick with one.

I see that there is now an entry for this on Boardgamegeek. Jason and Ivan - do you intend to spend any time there discussing CHA? I'm a REALLY impressed by what I've seen, and can;t wait to get it to the table.

I'd love to see an expansion with some more 'Punk roles, including a rigger-like character with auto-turrets and drones.

Hey, thanks, Paul! This is my baby, and unlike Ivan, I don't have a million games to support, so I definitely want to spend some time improving and expanding upon it. A Rigger Role seems pretty niche in context, but you've put the idea into my head and I'll definitely think about how I might be able to make it work. :)

I'll admit my motivation is that I have a very cool dwarf rigger mini on the way...from the set that Catalyst Game Labs released for "that other cyberpunk/fantasy" game.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
